It’s a new year and you’ve likely spent time thinking about how you’re going to improve your life in the coming year. Music is a great way to improve yourself and the world around you. Here are a few simple ways you can make music part of your new year’s resolutions.
Learn to play an instrument
If you don’t already play an instrument, why not learn? Music can be a great way to relax. It encourages creativity. It makes you a million times smarter (I’m pretty sure). Think about how it feels to listen to good music. Now, imagine making that music. There’s no feeling quite like it.
Whether your instrument is banjo, cello, didgeridoo or your voice, make the decision to start learning today.
Support Others Who Are Learning (Especially Kids!)
Even if you aren’t ready to pick up an instrument yet, you can be supportive of others who are learning. If you have kids who are just starting, you understand that the sounds they make don’t always resemble what most people identify as music. With steady practice, it won’t be long until you find yourself enjoying the time when they practice.
Encourage your kids (or others around you) to keep practicing. Even though it can be hard to listen to at first, don’t make comments that are discouraging or will make them self-conscious. Be supportive and give plenty of positive feedback. Ensure that they don’t miss lessons or other practices and make sure they have the supplies they need (strings for those violins and guitars, oil for the trumpets, lesson books or other music, etc.).
Remember, those scratchy, twangy first notes will start coming together like a puzzle. You can be a big part of helping the pieces to come together.
Support Local Artists
Maybe making music just isn’t your thing. You can still support others by attending local events. Make a goal to attend the Nevada Opera, Reno Phiharmonic or Reno Pops. Attend school competitions such as the Sierra Band Crusade. Check out some local acts at one of the many venues around town. You’ll have a great time and you’ll be supporting local musicians. Win/win/win (that kind of support deserves an extra win).
